At Oral & Facial Surgeons of Arizona, patient comfort and safety are central to every procedure we perform. Many oral and facial surgery treatments would be difficult or stressful without appropriate sedation. As board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons, we are extensively trained in anesthesia and sedation techniques, allowing us to safely tailor sedation options to each patient’s medical needs, procedure type, and comfort level.

Below, we explain the types of sedation we offer and how we help patients choose the option that is right for them.

Why Sedation Matters in Oral Surgery

Oral surgery procedures often involve sensitive areas of the face, jaw, and mouth. Anxiety, discomfort, and fear are common concerns for patients. Sedation helps by:

  • Reducing anxiety and stress
  • Minimizing pain and discomfort
  • Allowing procedures to be completed efficiently and safely
  • Improving the overall patient experience

Sedation is not one-size-fits-all. Our role as oral surgeons is to evaluate your medical history, the complexity of the procedure, and your personal concerns before recommending the most appropriate option.

Sedation Options at Oral & Facial Surgeons of Arizona

We offer three widely accepted sedation methods at our Phoenix and Tempe offices. Each option is administered with strict safety protocols and continuous monitoring.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia places the patient into a fully unconscious state. You will not be aware of the procedure and will not feel pain during surgery.

This option is typically recommended for:

  • Complex or lengthy surgical procedures
  • Extensive jaw or facial surgery
  • Patients with severe dental anxiety
  • Cases where complete immobility is required for safety

For us, patient safety is a top priority, and thorough preoperative evaluations are completed to determine whether this level of anesthesia is appropriate for each individual.

IV Sedation

IV sedation, also known as intravenous sedation, is one of the most common choices in oral surgery. Medication is delivered intravenously, producing a deeply relaxed state.

With IV sedation:

  • You remain responsive but very relaxed
  • Many patients have little to no memory of the procedure
  • Pain and anxiety are well controlled
  • Recovery is typically smoother than with general anesthesia

IV sedation is frequently used for the removal of wisdom teeth, dental implants, bone grafting, and other surgical procedures. Our surgeons are authorized and trained to administer IV sedation safely in our office setting.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, often referred to as laughing gas, is a mild form of sedation inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose.

This option is best suited for:

  • Patients with mild to moderate anxiety
  • Shorter or less invasive procedures
  • Patients who prefer minimal sedation
  • Individuals who want to drive themselves home after treatment

Nitrous oxide works quickly and wears off rapidly once the mask is removed. Patients remain awake, responsive, and comfortable throughout their visit.

How We Choose the Right Sedation for You

Choosing the right type of sedation involves careful consideration. During your consultation, we review:

  • Your medical history and current medications
  • Any past experiences with anesthesia
  • Your anxiety level and comfort preferences
  • The type and duration of the planned procedure

We believe informed patients make better decisions. Our team takes the time to explain recommendations clearly and answer all your questions, so you feel confident before treatment.

Experience You Can Trust

Our practice provides surgical and anesthesia care supported by the expertise of Dr. Sabol, a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon with advanced training in anesthesia. Dr. Sabol holds board certification in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as certification from the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology, reflecting a high level of qualification in both surgical care and anesthesia management.

Anesthesia and sedation are integral parts of oral and maxillofacial surgery, not supplementary services. Dr. Sabol’s extensive experience administering anesthesia allows us to maintain a strong focus on patient safety, comfort, and clinical precision. Each sedation plan is carefully developed based on the patient’s medical history, the planned procedure, and overall health considerations.
