What is Involved in a Bone Grafting Procedure?
Bone grafting is a multi-step process that is essential for creating a strong foundation for dental implants. The procedure typically lasts less than two hours and involves the following steps:
Step 1: Your oral surgeon will administer local anesthesia to numb the bone grafting site. If desired, sedation options such as nitrous oxide, general anesthesia, or IV techniques are available. Your doctor will discuss the best anesthesia option for your treatment. Patients undergoing IV sedation or general anesthesia will need a friend or family member to accompany them to and from the office.
Step 2: The bone graft material will be sourced from either the jawbone or another part of the body. Alternatively, patients can choose to use sterile allogeneic bone, which will be naturally replaced by the patient's own bone over four months. Tooth extractions may also be performed at this stage to expedite the healing process.
Step 3: The bone graft material is attached to the jawbone and shaped accordingly.
Step 4: The incision from the bone grafting procedure is closed with sutures.
Step 5: Your oral surgeon will provide post-operative care instructions for the bone graft site. It typically takes four to six months for the jawbone to fully heal and be ready for the dental implant procedure. It is important to be patient during this healing process to ensure proper integration of the new bone with the jawbone.
What is the Recovery Process Like After Dental Bone Grafting?
After bone grafting, patients may experience swelling and discomfort for the first two to three days. Detailed post-operative instructions will be provided by your oral surgeon to help facilitate a smooth healing process. Typically, patients are advised to follow these directions after the procedure:
- Refrain from touching the grafted areas or sutures with your tongue or fingers
- Avoid consuming hard or crunchy foods that may become lodged in the graft site
- Do not rinse or spit for 48 hours to allow the blood clot to form and the graft material to stabilize
- Sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling
- Apply ice to the face and jaw to reduce inflammation and bleeding
- Take anti-inflammatory medications as required
- Limit strenuous activities for the first two weeks after bone grafting
- Refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol as it can impede the healing process
- Maintain a nutritious diet to support the body's healing process.
